Authors Answer 74 – What We Are Working On Now

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099Oops.  Almost didn’t get this one in on the right day.

Question 74 – Can you tell us about a future book that you’re working on?

In the War of Memory Cycle, the protagonists have faced off against malevolent necromancers, fanatical armies, and even the direct focus of a wicked god! But can they handle….high school?! Coming next, Cob and his companions find themselves trapped on the idyllic campus of Firebird High, where the landscaper has claws and the chemistry teacher breathes acid! Can they juggle study-hall, sleepovers, soccer championships and senior prom, all while hunting for a way home? And what is that groaning that filters up from the school basement at night? Does it have anything to do with the recent grave-robbings, and the dirt that Principal Enkhaelen tracks into the halls every morning? Find out in…the War of Algebra!

Recent Reading: The Southern Reach Trilogy

It’s been a while since I’ve written a review, and to be honest, what I want to say about the Southern Reach trilogy, by Jeff Vandermeer, isn’t really review-like.  These books weren’t my favorite of all time or anything (they were solid 4* of 5*s), but they did strike at an interesting confluence of themes that I just want to talk about. Authors Answer 72 – Writing Targets

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099Hi!  I’m still alive!  It’s been a rough few months for me, writing-wise; between several disruptions of my work-schedule and some unanticipated stresses, I had a very irregular January and February, and have a few more odd events still to come in March.  But I’ve mostly recovered from the collapse noted below, and am back at writing 2-3 pages per day.  Yesterday and the day before were 3+ page days, at about 2700 words each, so that progress makes me feel much better.

Currently working on Chapter 26 out of probably 31.

Question 72 – Do you have a daily or weekly target for writing? What is it, and how do you achieve it?

Normally I have a target of 2-3 pages per writing day, and I write five days a week. I write before I go to my Day Job, so 2-3 is about the amount of writing I can squeeze in between gaining full consciousness and being forced to run out the door. There are two writing-days where I don’t have the Day Job hanging over me, so sometimes I get 4-6 pages in, and there are always outlier days where I get up to 8 because I feel very motivated. My main goal is to get -something- down on the page, and keep pushing at it until I have to break off for the day. It’s just persistence — and a steady schedule I guess, because my Day Job schedule was wacky for most of February and totally threw me off my writing game. Hopefully by the time this posts, I will have gotten back into the proper swing of it.

Authors Answer 68 – Authors Research the Strangest Things

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099One of my favorite things about writing: Learning!

Question 68 – What are some of the most unusual things you’ve researched for your writing?

Oh I’ve researched LOTS of stuff.  The most interesting to me was eye enucleation, but some recent ones include properties of silk armor, pre-modern heating and cooling, farming techniques, volcanic hazards, photosynthesizing sea-slugs, bee vision, unusual riding animals, fungus crafts, scar mobility exercises, eyeliner tattoos, and alpine survival.  All relevant to the story/world, even the sea-slugs!

More recently than this post, I’ve done a bunch of research on mountain climbing, altitude sickness and the Khumbu region (where Mt. Everest is), since I have some characters currently in an analogous situation.  I’ve learned some new terms like col and couloir to describe mountain structure, and the related images and maps are really interesting.  Always been distantly interested in mountaineering (I would never do it but the stories are absorbing) and other wilderness/disaster survival topics, so a lot of my research is about that — making sure my characters, astray in the wilderness, don’t have too easy (or too hard) a time of it, depending on their skill levels.

Authors Answer 67 – The Challenge of Writing Romance

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099Romantic relationships!  The bane of my writing!  Hearts and flowers are not for me.

Question 67 – Valentine’s Day is coming up. How do you handle the romantic aspect of writing in fiction?

In my personal life, I’m not at all interested in romance, but I try not to let my nature influence my characters too much. They all have their own wants and needs, so while my first book had nothing of the sort, the subsequent ones have seen relationships form, plus some brief not-quite-sex scenes. It’s not obligatory though; I have several characters who are asexual or aromantic and quite willing to say that they’re not inclined. I think it’s an important part of character development either way (interested or non), but I haven’t made it a big part of the plot; in fact, the largest relationship-related storyline is the anti-romance between the protagonist and his (ex?)-girlfriend, who both need to figure some things out. No Twu Wuv around here.

Authors Answer 66 – The Urge to Quit Writing

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099Relevant to my current feelings of inertia.  Must…get back into the groove…

Question 66 – Have you ever wanted to quit writing?

The temptation is always there, particularly in times like now, where I’m struggling through the first draft of a story. Or when I’m bogged down in endless edits and rewrites, or when I’m eyeing my sales statistics, or… Well, the point is, there are many, many, many easier things I could be doing with my time, but when I’ve actually tried to walk away, I may get some brief relief…until the story-ideas and characters start plaguing me. If I ignored them for long enough, I’m sure the urge would eventually fade, and with it the skill; whenever I take a long pause from writing, I get this quiet fear that I’ve forgotten how to do it. But I’ve worked too hard to reach this level, and I owe it to the characters to tell their stories — because they feel like people to me, and I’m their only outlet to the world.

So yeah, I could stop at any time if not for the voices in my head. >_>

Authors Answer 63 – We All Started Somewhere

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099

Question 63 – When did you start writing fiction, and what did you write?

I don’t have anything to give me an exact date, even a year, but I do remember writing stories in the little blue-covered test books we were given in elementary school.  The earliest one I can recall was a story something like The Ordinary Princess, but from the perspective of her maid/companion — even then, I was completely uninterested in princesses or other royalty.  I don’t remember the plot, but that feeling has continued to this day; I’d rather follow the exploits of peasants and soldiers and just comment on the nobility from afar.

Expanding on this…  I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, with at least one complete short story based on my current writing-world done back when I was thirteen.  I still use a lot of the material I imagined back then (from about 13-18) as background info for the world; I have an entire notebook I wrote histories and details in while in high school, and found my first awesome nerd-friend by showing it to people.

I also have two fragments of stories from 1990, when I was ten, involving D&D-style adventuring parties.  Since I was apparently reading the Dragonlance books at age eight, this makes sense.

I started drafting my series in earnest in 2003 — at least, that’s what my file dates indicate.  Clearly it took a long time for me to sort the ideas into a manageable form, because I only published the first one in 2013.

Authors Answer 62 – Our Favourite Created Characters

shai-b3header

Well, this one is obvious.

Question 62 – Who is your favorite character that you created (either for a book/story or just because)?

My consistently favorite character is probably the one that serves as my icon here on WordPress, Shaidaxi. I’ve played/written him since I was maybe thirteen, making him an easy skin to slip into when it comes to the series; also, he’s a snarky and erratic individual, so his dialogue is always entertaining to write.

newErolan2

“Nope.”

However, I’ve found that other characters occasionally eclipse him when I get a chance to focus on them, so I often have a temporary favorite that I dedicate a lot of side-story to. My current temp fave is Linciard, who I’m trying to un-mire from the plot swamp he’s been stuck in.

Linciard!  Put a shirt on!

Authors Answer 61 – A Look at 2016

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099Oops — looks like I missed this when it first popped up.  Granted, it’s been a busy few days, New Years being my dad’s birthday and all.

Question 61 – What are your goals for 2016?

Finish and publish my fourth book, hopefully by mid-year, and get started on the fifth. Well — get a good way through the fifth! I’ve been trying to reduce my required writing time, but it’s a war between motivation and my desire to lay on the floor and do nothing now and then. I should also get some short stories done, even though I hate short stories; there are certain side characters’ tales to either fill in or wrap up, so I have many ideas, I’m just not fond of the format. Must push myself. Beyond my writing-work, I really don’t have other goals…I just go along with my schedule. I’m dull! 😀

Best Reads 2015

Time again for the year-end wrap-up.  As always, the books I highlight weren’t necessarily published in 2015, because I don’t make any great effort to read new books; I have an endless backlog, so I get to things when I can.  In fact, I got to some old books this year and realized I should have read them 10-20 years ago, when they were new!

Such as…
