I’ve mentioned before, though briefly, that I’ve played my share of MMORPGs. I think I should confess that the only reason I’m not still playing them (and thus slacking on my writing) is because I started raiding so much that I hurt my wrists.
And thus ended my professional off-tank career.
So I’ve been writing this story for about…twenty years, and at least fifteen of those years have involved the internet. I know that number specifically because I made my original website back in 1998, and it’s still there.
That’s the problem.
On the heels of yesterday’s Technology post and subsequent discussion with Joachim Boaz, I looked at my Power Sources map again and decided it needed some more work.
So much work that it expanded to three maps.
One of the things I have always been certain about with my world is that it is not a Standard Medieval Setting. In fact, the first version I worked on was maybe 300 years in the future of the current version, with arcanotech and clockpunk elements. (That’s still the future. I’ll get to it eventually.)
Some of you are probably tired of my maps, but that’s okay. You don’t have to read about them!
For those that like them, I have some…uh…interesting ones this time.
Hi there, everyone who just showed up because Pauline M Ross is awesome! Nice to see you. I wasn’t planning on posting tonight — it’s a work night and my feet are sore — but then I remembered I had some images from Book 1’s cover work-up that I hadn’t aired before, so I might as well.
I’ve already made a few posts involving my made-up language, Gheshvan: one involving the base-six number system (which might have gotten a bit ridiculous there at the end) and the other with the phonetic alphabet. I might have mentioned in those posts that I planned to do a larger pictographic variant of the written language — not just the phonetic alphabet but a sort of Japanese conglomeration of phonemes and pictographs/ideographs.
I have a few to show today.
I think I have a problem: ever since I decided to make my own world-maps, I haven’t been able to stop. I’ve always had a detail-oriented personality, which is why I still have reams of world-information needing translation into a wiki or something, but the sudden ability to quickly visualize trends and demographics has kind of overwhelmed me.
It’s not that these are necessary — though they’re certainly useful. It’s just that I really like to see Halci as if it was real, tectonic plates and all.
I already showed off the tectonic map earlier, but that’s okay. I have more!
Back to the fun thing I like to call ‘nitpicking my artist until she drives across state lines to stab me with a kitchen knife’!

I’m always tinkering with the details of my world, whether consciously or in the back of my mind, and I always knew that it did not have the same length of year/month/week/day as Earth. I just recently formalized that idea, though, and sketched out a formal calendar.
