Obligatory Halloween Horror Post 2015

It’s that time again!

I am a big horror fan, though alas it seems like I haven’t read any horror novels at all this year — I was too busy going through C.J. Cherryh’s entire Foreigner series.  Dang, I’ll need to fix that for next year.

However, I do watch a lot of horror movies, and watch people play horror games on Youtube.  I’m aware of myself enough as a big chicken to not want to play them myself, plus I have a lot of other work to do, so I spend most of my time with horror-material on as background noises.  I guess I’m soothed by the sound of screams…

Anyway, some highlights of the year.  As always, I list things in the year that I watch them, rather than the year they came out.

Authors Answer 52 – A Big Thank You

cropped-pia19912-main_mcam-sol-1099It’s been a year since Authors Answer started, and we’ve tackled some interesting questions, both self-posed and fan-submitted.  Now it’s time to say thanks — to everyone who reads and responds, to everyone who observes quietly, and to everyone who just passes by!  Without readers, writers are just fantastical diarists, so let me just say THANK YOU to all of you for being here.

Monday Music: Halloween Edition

I was never particularly a goth.  I wore a lot of black during high school, but that was influenced as much by being a theater techie as by my choice of music — especially since at that time I was neck-deep in Nine Inch Nails, which isn’t goth but industrial.  I went to goth clubs with friends in college, but certainly didn’t blend in there, and my roommate always had to apply my eyeliner because I’d banished all makeup from my presence after quitting dance as a kid.  (That frickin’ stage makeup, ugh.)

However, I did find a lot to like about the music in the club, especially as much of it dovetailed with my pre-existing interest in horror and the macabre.  Since we’re nearing Halloween, it seems a good time for songs specifically about horror tropes.

Authors Answer 50 – Family Support

I just got back from a trip to see my extended family in New England, so this question comes at a good time.  A couple of them are reading my series now, including my mom, aunt and grandfather, and I know my mom reads my blog from time to time.  Hi Mom!

Question 50: How much support for your writing do you get from your family?

Authors Answer 49 – Writing Necessities

I work in the dark. Muhahahaha.

Jay Dee's avatarI Read Encyclopedias for Fun

Everyone has their own little quirks. They like to have certain things with them, or they have routines that they must do. Writers are the same. Many authors have to have certain conditions to be able to write more effectively. This week, we find out what everyone needs to have while they write.

320px-Modern-ftn-pen-cursiveQuestion 49 – What must you have when you write?

Linda G. Hill

It depends what I’m writing. Working on my novel The Great Dagmaru, I had to listen to the group Buck-Tick in order to get anything done. Most of the time though, I need quiet. The only thing I must have no matter what is the reasonable assurance that I won’t be interrupted. If I don’t have that, I get too distracted thinking about what’s going to get me out of my seat next to write as much as a sentence.

Authors Answer 48 – Writing and Publishing Isn’t All Fun

Question 48 – What’s your least favourite part of the writing and publishing process?

Considering what I talked about earlier this week, my answer to the most recent Authors Answer question should be no surprise.  Every time I come back to doing a first draft after having spent months and months refining a final one, I feel like I’ve forgotten how to write!

Book 4 Progress Report: September

I know I haven’t been posting much.  Spinning the rough draft of Book 4 from cobwebs and moonbeams has been draining; I don’t have nearly as much detail in these later notes as I did with the first three books.  That has been a bit of a curse for my energy-levels, but is probably a blessing in other ways, since the first three books took a tortuous path toward production that Book 4 will likely avoid.

It’s going well so far, despite eating all my brainpower.  I have the two main threads mostly nailed down, and I’m beginning to find my way with the lesser threads.  The villains’ voices are starting to make sense to me.

Authors Answer 47 – Portraying Cultures in Fiction

Question 47 – How do you portray different cultures in your writing?

Clearly, I do a lot of work on cultures in my world, with one reasonably-constructed language (and its dialects) and four more that I reference in bits and pieces, plus extensive geographic and demographic info (which I need to update) and several thousand years of history.  But all this work is to no avail if I’ve done it badly.  I think I’ve weeded out most of the teenage misconceptions that peppered the older versions of the world, but it’s a constant process of improvement.

Titles, Book 3

I like titling things.  I recently gave Erica a title for an upcoming short story compilation (if she decided to use that one >_>), and I have an ever-growing list of titles to someday be used for books, short stories, or just chapters in my series.

I’ve previously discussed the titles found in book 1 and book 2, so it’s time to discuss Book 3.  As always, they’re a mix of references, song lyrics and stray thoughts, some of which are relevant to the actual text and some of which just influenced it through mood.
