Authors Answer 12 – Childhood Favourites

I did also read a lot of fairy tales growing up, since my mom had all the color-coded fairy books. And dang, I should have mentioned Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark….

Authors were once children.  Hard to believe, isn’t it?  Many authors loved reading books when they were kids.  It’s my daughter’s third birthday on Sunday, and she enjoys books, though she can’t read them.  She’s mostly into colouring books at the moment, though she likes looking at pictures, too.  Last year, she got the entire set of Beatrix Potter books.  We haven’t read it together yet, since she’s not patient enough to sit down for more than a minute with it.  So, what did our authors enjoy when they were kids?

peterrabbitQuestion 12: My daughter’s third birthday is on January 25th. What children’s books did you read when you were a child?

H. Anthe Davis

There were these two Buddies books with a duck and a bunny and a monkey who were best friends and had adventures that usually involved standing up for people being bullied.  I really liked those…

Book 3 Redraft: Complete

Finished the coda today — it’s like an epilogue, except since the story continues, it can’t be.  Not much to say other than ‘whew’.  Gonna do some spot-edits tomorrow/Thursday/maybe Friday depending how long it takes, and then will start throwing copies at my betas.  Anyone interested in being a beta reader (for the third book in a series), holler.

Authors Answer 11 – Genre Challenge

If genre mashups count on this one, I actually have some sci-fantasy and fantasy-western in the future of my fantasy world, and another blogger got me thinking about a medical mystery/fantasy combo. But as you can probably tell, it’s difficult for me to get away from fantasy.

Many authors tend to stick with one or two genres.  They stay with what they know and they do it well.  But sometimes, authors may want to challenge another genre.  Try out something completely new.  Imagine a fantasy author tackling detective stories or a romance author challenging horror.  I wonder how that would turn out.

John_Wayne_-_1961Question 11: If you were going to write in a genre other than what you normally write, what would you like to try?

Elizabeth Rhodes

I would probably take a swing at writing something funny.  I’ve written scripts for a webcomic and had a lot of fun doing so, so I wouldn’t mind getting back into that.  But writing a script in general would be a break from the norm for me.

Best Reads 2014

Good old year-end wrap-up.  I should have done this a day or so ago, but I claim exemption due to New Years being my dad’s birthday as well.  We had a little party.  Happy birthday, Dad!

Anyway, time to run down my favorite reads of the year.  As usual, these books weren’t necessarily published in 2014 — though I think most of them were!  Yay me for reading vaguely current material!

Without further ado…

Status Update and Paperdolls

Before I start throwing end-of-the-year posts around, I figured I’d give a small update.  Book 3 is still chugging along with the rewrite; I’m four sections from finishing the 34th chapter (of 36), but since this is all combat, those sections are short.  I should wrap it up tomorrow.  35 is slightly shorter, and 36 will be really quick because it includes material from a previous thread which I’ve already rewritten.  At this rate, I hope to start trawling for beta readers in early January.

Turning Points

I know I haven’t been blogging much recently.  Bad me.  There are two reasons.

1) My cover artist (and supplier of all the other decent graphics for this blog) has been going through some family medical issues, and thus hasn’t had the time/energy to produce anything for me.  I think a lot of my posts rely on graphics, because otherwise I turn them into Great Walls of Text, so I haven’t had any shiny-pretty-monstery things to chatter about in a while.  But conditions are improving, so hopefully we’ll be back in the groove soon.

2) I am neck-deep in the redraft.  As of now, I’m working on chapter 31 of 36, and I’ve come upon one of the major revelations/emotional blows/turning points of the book (and possibly the series).  And I’ve discovered that the way I handled it in my first draft was CRAP.  I’ve felt this way about a lot of the stuff in the final quarter — Erica can no doubt attest to my whining — but this is one area that’s going to require a complete rethink and rewrite, including redoing the two and a half pages I just redid (unsatisfactorily) this morning.  I have a concept in mind, but it’s going to take some work and a lot of section-shuffling.

Obviously this requires a lot of brain-energy.  Cob’s thread has been kicking me in the noggin because it’s 50% of the story but I’m really dissatisfied with how I did the original draft; in contrast, Sarovy and Geraad were little darlings who didn’t need much clean-up.  So instead of having the mental capacity to write interesting world-posts, I’ve been doing tropes and Q&A stuff or sometimes just slumping in my chair going ‘aaaargh’ and then watching Adventure Time.

So I apologize for that.  But I don’t apologize for dedicating my brain-space to the story.  Turning points are delicate, guys, and as much as I don’t want to disappoint you….I don’t want to disappoint me either.  The perfect words are out there somewhere, but it’s taking some excavation to reach them, so bear with me.

The book is still on track for February, as far as I can tell — though it might be late February.  But then, that’s the benefit of self-publishing: I set my own targets and can adjust them as needed.

Stay tuned.

Trope Roulette: My Instincts Are Showing

trope_roulette

It’s been a while, but I’m ready for a second installment of Trope Roulette!  The idea is to visit that evil time-sink of a site, TVTropes, and hit the Random button until I find something I can talk about.  This time it took eleven tries before I hit upon today’s subject.

The trope is defined thus:

A non-human character tries to live amongst humans. Or maybe a human character is made half-non-human. He does a good job of hiding his non-humanness, but occasionally his species’s normal (and non-human) behavior comes out.

Whatever the reason for a transformation may be, this is almost guaranteed to happen during or after shapeshifting. This may include food preferences unusual for their current form or other stereotypical behavior.

Obligatory Halloween Horror Post 2014

As a writer with more than a tinge of horror in my work, I am contractually* required to post on Halloween about skulls and ghosts and witches and skeletons and ghouls and guys in hockey masks and, um, cauldrons and bats?  Things like that?

I’ve always loved the horror genre.  Maybe I’ve told this before, but my first horror movie was The Gate, and there’s a scene in it where a kid is hiding in a closet and arms come out of the back wall and grab him (or her…I forget).  For years, I slept facing the wall so it couldn’t take me unawares.

No Pressure Now…

Ahh, editing.  The endless war.

I have two solid books out there, so it shouldn’t be too hard, right?  I know what I’m doing.  I have a Plan.

But the most difficult part of editing the third book in this (six-book) series has been keeping hold of the reins.  Because after two books’ worth of tension and thread-spinning, there’s a lot going on — yet I can’t let it build too high or veer off in over-the-top directions.  There are some sharp dramatic peaks here, but there are grander ones I need to save for the true end.

Recent Reading: BOOM! Comics

A couple months ago, I noticed that Humble Bundle was selling a batch of digital comics from BOOM! Studios.  They’d been on my radar for a little while, since they produce (most of? all of?) the Adventure Time comics, which are kind of a thing at my workplace these days, plus Lumberjanes by the lady who does (and just finished) Nimona.  I also happened to stop by their booth at Phoenix ComiCon and ended up taking home an armload of books.  So I pitched in for the Bundle to see what other fun things they had.

I only got around to reading them at my Vegas convention (what else would I do with my downtime?), and obviously only got around to reviewing them right now.  But don’t let that be a mark against them, because there was some great stuff.
