Cosmology 5: The Moon’s Effect and the Falling Stars

In the aftermath of the arrival of the moon, a gap was seen in the Chain of Ydgys.  Fearing to damage the delicate moon-shadow or the world of Halci itself, Light refrained from reaching out to repair the gap, though he tried to use his radiance to exert some influence over the displaced shards.  Too slowly, they began to close the space.

Cosmology 4: The Curse of Magic and the Capture of the Moon

Before the discovery of magic, the only power came from the spirits and elementals.  Each spirit or elemental could shift energy from one group of its children to another, strengthening certain children for certain purposes or spreading its energy evenly to protect them all.  No creature, whether skinchanger or element-kin, had control over what amount of power they were given; they could request it of their parent but could not demand, and could only use it in the manner for which it was gifted.

Cosmology 3: The Age of Wilds and the Great Schism

What followed from the birth of the Great Spirit came to be called the Age of Wilds, and was the first age to be witnessed by mortal creatures as well as the immortal elements.  The various splinters that the Great Spirit had cleaved from itself gained sentience of their own and began to carve out niches in the physical world—some as Water-dwellers, some in the Air, some in the depths of the Earth—and as they went, they shed smaller splinters which grew into mortal replicas of their parents.

General Studies Lecture Series: Techniques of Arcane First Aid

The instructor stands on the stage in the middle of the auditorium, thwacking his pointer into his right palm absently as he watches the last attendees take their seats.  Behind him, a silvery banner hangs in front of the closed curtains, shimmering faintly with arcane energy; at his elbow is the podium, topped by a sheaf of notes.

As soon as the doors are closed and the last student sits, he begins.

Cosmology 2: The Elements and the Rise of Life

When the world of Halci was first formed by the hands of the lesser shadow and the little light, it was made up of four parts: earth, air, water, and the fiery breath that had sparked its life.  Initially these elements mingled freely, not yet bound by their differences, so that the land could flow like liquid and the air turn hard as rock, and the fire dance across the water without harm.  Some even changed nature from one moment to the next, never quite happy with their options.

On the Averognans

Captain Sarovy steepled his fingers and stared across the desk at Archer-Corporal Kurengenothe.  The corporal stared back, blinking in slow puzzlement.

For once, Sarovy was stymied by how to start.

Terminology in a World Without Sin

For a long time, my gods had Greek names.  Some had servitors that were termed ‘angels’.  Some of the villainous powers were referred to as ‘demons’.  I used certain curse-words in the way they’re currently applied, and sometimes considered which of my characters would embody the Seven Sins or the Seven Virtues.

It took years to get away from that.  I still haven’t entirely escaped.

Cosmology 1: In the Beginning…

In the beginning, there was Darkness—solid, uniform Darkness, with neither breach nor shade.  If it had thought, it might have considered itself to always have been, and expect itself to always continue to be, in exactly this way; calm and still as if resting, perhaps dreaming, perhaps dead.
